亞熱帶是世界上一個重要的氣候帶。竺可楨認為亞熱帶氣候的主要特點是“冬月微寒，足使喜溫的熱帶作物不能良好生長。其另一特點為每年冬季雖有冰雪，但無霜期在8個月以上，使農作物一年可有兩造的收獲”。亞熱帶有冷、熱兩季，冷季種喜涼作物，熱季種喜溫作物，喜涼和喜溫不同生態型作物一年兩熟或三熟，是亞熱帶農業的基本特征。
我國的亞熱帶位于秦嶺、淮河以南，雷州半島以北，橫斷山脈以東（22～34°N，98°E以東）的廣大地區。涉及16個省市（包括中國臺灣省），面積約2.4×106km2，約占全國國土面積的1/4，素有“七山一水二分田”或“八山一水一分田”之說，人口約占全國總人口的一半。我國亞熱帶屬東岸濕潤季風區，位置比西岸氣候型偏南5～8個緯度，比大陸氣候型偏北6～7個緯度。與世界同緯度比，除沙漠地區外，是zui暖熱的地區，雨量遠比同緯度的充沛，生物資源豐富，四季長青，土壤肥沃，生物生產力高，農作物高產優質，是我國主要的農林產區。
土壤偏酸性分布著大范圍的紅壤和黃土。本區土壤由于受雨水淋溶和常年的微生物分解，大部分地區相對其他地區土壤貧瘠。
植被特點是根系廣大，不論是在濕潤地區或是干旱地區。主要植被類型有亞熱帶常綠闊葉林、亞熱帶常綠硬葉林、沙漠植被。
我國亞熱帶丘陵山地雨熱基本同季，光熱水資源豐富。年總輻射量多在38×108～54×108焦耳/米2，全年大于10℃的積溫在4250～8000℃之間，大于10℃持續天數，在220～350天左右。年降水量為1000～2000毫米，多數降水在作物需水較多的溫暖季節。在主要農林作物生長季節（4～10月）的太陽輻射、積溫和降水可占全年總量的70～85%，光、熱、水的配合，有利于亞熱帶各種喜溫作物，林果和灌木的生長，具有發展大農業的有利條件。
